About Us

The Araceli Theatre Project is a unique program offered by the Cancer Awareness, Resources and Education (CARE) program of San Francisco General Hospital.

The Araceli Theater Project is a patient-centered project that grew out of the CARE program, and is directed by experienced professionals with expertise in the performing arts.  During the course of the Araceli Theater Project, facilitators guide participants through a theater exploration that culminates with an original theatrical production, written, conceived, and performed in collaboration with the project participants. Most of the participants in the Araceli Theater Project have no acting experience at all, and have chosen to venture onto a new stage at a critical juncture in their lives. The performances look at how, in the act of creating beauty and art, healing, resilience and pleasure may be felt in moments of deep despondency and fear.

The primary objective of this multi-lingual (English/Spanish/Cantonese) project is to provide patient-guided self-expression and awareness for medically underserved cancer survivors through an innovative, experiential theater arts program. The project's well-attended public performances have promoted greater understanding and awareness among participants' families, friends, UCSF medical students, health care providers, and the larger San Francisco community.

The program fosters dialogue among different patient and provider communities and aims to encourage a deeper awareness of the complex issues surrounding cancer, particularly as it affects the medically underserved.
