The CARE program is designed for people with cancer who receive their care and treatment at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). Our cancer patients are often profoundly isolated and lack the resources to access traditional sources of education and support. For many, cancer is just one more problem in a deeply troubled life.
Prior to 2002 when CARE was initiated, there were no cancer education programs accessible to or appropriate for SFGH’s cancer patients. Some of these patients reluctantly complied with the treatment regimens offered by their oncology providers. Others retreated into a deadly isolation, overwhelmed and confused by a frightening disease whose treatment is often debilitating and extremely difficult to bear. A number of these cancer patients with limited or no English proficiency, or those facing literacy challenges found it impossible to comprehend what was happening to them or how to best take care of themselves. Many of these patients kept their cancer diagnoses secret from friends and even family members, terrified of being shunned and rejected or somehow causing the people they loved to suffer.
CARE offers tailored “live” education programs in English, Spanish, and Cantonese. The program is well-regarded by oncology providers and is considered a national model in delivering effective patient education for the medically underserved.
Today, you can make a tremendous difference in the life of an SFGH cancer patient. Every dollar you send helps us provide educational materials, food, and transportation to the patients we serve. We hope that we can count on you to help.
