Araceli Theatre Project

The Araceli Theater Project, founded by Flavia Maucci in 2004, was an important component of the CARE program. Initially funded through the Lance Armstrong Foundation and more recently funded by the San Francisco Arts Commission, Programs in the Community, Araceli Theater was an inovative multi-lingual (English/Spanish/Cantonese) patient-centered theater project, directed by experienced performing arts professionals. During the course of the Araceli Theater Project, participants were guided through a theater exploration that culminated in an original theatrical production, written, conceived, and performed in collaboration with project participants. Most of the participants in the Araceli Theater Project had no acting experience at all, and choose to venture onto a new stage at a critical juncture in their lives. The program fostered dialogue among different patient and provider communities and aimed to encourage a deeper awareness of the complex issues surrounding the cancer experience.

Due to the current economic crisis, the Araceli Theater Project is on hiatus. We look forward to a time when resources are less scarce an we can reintroduce creative self expression as a way to promote healing and community building among CARE participants aand raise awareness in the larger San Francisco community. Stay tuned!
